I’m writing this assuming you have the mechanical ability to change a brake calliper and pads on your own car. So not a super detailed guide with a full step by step process.
I thought I’d pop a quick bit of info up on how to upgrade your Twingo GT (and other lower spec model Renaults) from a 259mm disc setup to a 280mm Clio 172 brake discs, bigger calliper and pads using a calliper from the Peugeot 206 GTI 180 (The Bosch callipers can also be found on lots of others including the 307 hdi)
The OEM Renault calliper has a smaller 48mm piston and 100 x 65mm (6500mm²) pads, the Peugeot item has a 54mm piston (the same as the 172), along with a 137 x 57mm pad (7809mm²) (side note this is bigger than a 172 pad at 128 x 55.4mm which has a surface area of 7091.2mm²). The Twingo GT has a 259mm x 20.6mm disc and the Clio 172 has a 280mm x 24mm disc. So, a decent increase in pad size, piston size and disc size are gained from doing this conversion. The only minor downside is the slight increase in pedal throw, this is due to the small master cylinder size vs the now increased piston size. You can fit a larger master cylinder though if it bothers you, though I drove with this setup for 2 years and did multiple track days too with no issue.
For this conversion you will need to get a pair of 280mm Clio 172 discs
A pair of callipers and carriers from the 206 GTI 180/307 HDI/2.0 Petrol
A set of brake pads.
2 x 1mm m12 washers.
Die grinder for clearance
First job is to whip off all the original brakes, get it all off and out of the way. Remove the calliper completely and undo the brake lines from it. These can be fitted directly to the new Bosch callipers.
Fit the Clio 172 discs and the calliper carrier including the spacer/washer between them and the hub. This is to centralise the carrier to the disc as there is a slight offset. You should now be able to see if and how much material you need to remove from the calliper and carrier, they sometimes just touch the edge of the disc. Some seem to need it and other not so much. It was a very slight amount on my own set.
Once you are happy with the clearance fit the new pads and then the calliper, repeat on the other side of the car. Bleed the brakes and away you go. Easy as pie and a nice brake upgrade.
