So. Here we have....
Off comes the bonnet. The first bit of many.
Nosecone....
Rip out the crossmember, Top cooler, bottom cooler and pipes, airbox, inlet pipe, Turbo heatsheild and top and bottom rad hoses. Disconnect the fan loom (if its std, at the fan and relay connectors) which can stay in the car. Undo the rad brackets and pull it up and out with fans attached. Take the plenum off as well, just for kicks. Undo the wiring to the coolant pump, Amal valve, coolant sensor and oil sensors and unroute back to the cambelt cover.
Basically you've been stripping away all the induction system and ancilliaries.
Take the black cover off the computer and unclip the whole assembly at the top. Move it forward and rotate it a bit like so.
Time up the engine, with a 22mm socket on the crank pulley, turning clockwise. Line the mark above the square hole up with the engine vertical....look along the rocker cover at the studs in line. In this picture the yellow timing mark made by the last bod in here is slightly out.
Remove the 16mm bolt in the bottom of the turbo support leg. Undo the 2 downpipe retaining bolts and if applicable remove the 4 10mm downpipe heatshield retainers and brackets, and the 13mm on the back. Free the downpipe and heatshield from the turbo elbow.
Loosen the 2 11mm nuts that hold the top of the turbo support rod.
Loosen the 4 17mm nuts that hold the turbo on. Then undo the 24mm oil feed pipe from the block and unplug the oil return from the rubber pipe.
Take the 4 nuts off and drop the turbo off. You'll need quality spanners for these babies. Round em off and you're in the plop. You can modify a ring spanner to help crack em off by shaving the back edge of the ring down to make it thinner.
Put the turbo somewhere safe where it won't get wet or covered in crap.
It's worth mentioning that up to this point, nothing (this time) has broken, sheared, rounded or seized. Amazing, for a 100K old car on it's original HG. The turbo 17mm's fought back a bit and I was forced to break out the Flank drive plus but I got it with some patience. And a hammer. Anything you have that is broken, make a note to resolve it before reassembly.
