Ok guys and girls, alot of people have been asking about running after market steering wheels and retaining cruise control. Im not that great at writing things up but ill give it ago.
There are alot of crude versions using the original switches and cable tying them to the wheels and even just fitting them switches to plates. To me it looks a bit pants so i went down the route of adding momentary switches and using the original pcb's resistors. You can buy inline resistors of the same values from maplins and ebay if required.
Basically the switch system works by giving different resistance values back to the uch so that i knows which switch is being pressed, there are only 2 wires for all 4 switches, a common feed and a common return.
i have quickly knocked up a paint drawing showing the values of the 3 resistors needed, one is a straight through.
R0 is cancel
R3 is resume
R1 slow down
R2 speed up
(these are correct as far as i can remember)
you will need a momentary switch for each of these, ie push and release switches. I opted for black and red ones, black for resume and speed up and red for slow down and cancel.
You will see all the wiring once you remove the airbag and steering wheel. its very basic. as my steering wheel was ruined i used a bit of original wiring so i could retain the standard connector plug. You will also need a suitable plate to mount the switches on, i found mine on ebay and it matched my steering wheel perfectly.
i marked it up and drilled through for the switches
after that it was just a case of wiring it all up as per the diagram and then hiding it all in the boss.
not the best write up i know, but fire away with any questions you have and ill answer them as best i can for you. If i remove the wheel at any point i will take some more pics for you
